In the year 2048, high hopes of the technological left for genetically-engineering humans, or merging man and computer, have faded. Advances have come, though uniting human embryos with those of bonobos, chimpanzee-like apes famous among zoologist for always being ready to make love, not war.

Bonobo-humans, known as bumans, have an average IQ of 80 and talk in simple sentences. Corporate demand for them is potentially high because they are strong and will work in dangerous jobs for bananas. Pornographers also want them for a new sexual frontier, human-buman contact. Churches are deeply divided over whether bumans have souls and are capable of worship.

This is the ocean of contention that threatens to engulf U.S. Senator Josh Logan and his family. In a tough re-election fight against a pornographer, Logan has to decide wether to alienate prominent backers, and his son, by supporting buman rights. Plot swirl, politicians debate - and the outcome is deadly.
